How to Secure an Internet Server

How to Secure an Internet Server

When you initially set up a PC server to act as a website host, the system will be transmitting unencrypted data through the Internet. This is a potentially dangerous configuration, especially if your Internet server handles private and confidential information. To secure your Internet server, you will need to use the Internet Information Services tool to require secure communications through the Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, protocol.
1 – Log on to your PC server with an administrator username and password.
2 – Go to the Start menu, open the “Administrative Tools” submenu and choose “Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager” from the list of tools.
3 – Navigate to the “Websites” folder on the left side of the window.
4 – Right-click on the item labeled “Default Website” and select “Properties” from the contextual menu.
5 – Click on the “Directory Security” tab at the top of the pop-up window.
6 – Go to the “Secure communications” section of the window and press the “Edit” button.
7 – Place a checkmark next to “Require secure channel (SSL)” and hit “OK” to enable the security settings.
