How to Repair a Dropped Hard Drive
A hard drive stores information on its platters through magnetism, and the information contained therein can become jarred or otherwise displaced through physical damage, including the damage sustained from a drop. You must repair your dropped external hard drive to reconstruct the information on the system volume, allowing you to pull files off the drive as you please once again.1 – Plug the external drive into your computer.
2 – Right-click “Start,” then click “Explore.”
3 – Right-click the icon representing the external drive, then click “Properties.”
4 – Click “Tools” and then “Check Now.” Check the boxes next to “Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.”
5 – Press the “Enter” key to repair the drive information.
