Tips to Avoid Spyware

Tips to Avoid Spyware

Spyware excels at sneaking onto your computer and watching your activities, then sending the information it uncovers back to whomever created it via the Internet. Solutions to avoid spyware exist, however, and most are easy, free and relatively effective. Following a few basic tips goes a long way in preventing spyware attacks.
Install Trusted Anti-virus and Anti-spyware
A variety of anti-virus and anti-spyware software exists from a number of trusted, reliable manufacturers. Research and compare brands to find out which suits your needs best. An anti-virus program alone won’t prevent spyware unless it includes an anti-spyware feature. Keep the database updated and run scheduled scans.
Never Download an Unknown Anti-spyware Program
Most Internet advertisements for anti-spyware programs that appear without warning turn out to be frauds. Spammers often use email to advertise these false programs to actually install their own spyware on your computer. These advertisements also parade as important computer notices, stating that your computer might be at risk, to trick you into downloading the spyware.
Avoid Freeware Downloads
Free downloadable programs, called freeware, appeal to users by offering customized toolbars and more, but these programs often come from untrustworthy websites and come bundled with forms of spyware. Turn to reliable sources for any downloads. Only install software that you’ve researched and learned about thoroughly. Always scan downloaded programs before executing them.
Avoid Questionable Websites
Websites with poor reputations often have them for a reason. An untrusted website is more likely to contain hidden spyware. If you don’t trust a website, don’t visit it. Websites that allow you to share copyrighted music and video files free and websites that profit off of consumers’ hidden desires and addictions typically have weaker ethics to start with and won’t think twice about sneaking spyware onto your computer.
Don’t Click on Pop Ups
Regardless of the websites you visit, never click links contained within pop-up windows. These windows often originate from spyware programs, and clicking on the links they contain might install spyware. Avoid clicking within the pop-up window, even to click on “Close” or “Cancel.” Always exit out of a pop-up window by clicking on the “X” in the title bar.
Limit Pop Ups and Scripts
Most browsers have settings and add-ons that allow you to limit pop-up windows, scripts and cookies. Adjusting the security settings to reduce active content often reduces the amount of pop-up windows leaking through. Installing an official add-on to block scripts typically removes pop-ups altogether. Some types of cookies act like spyware by revealing information about the pages you visit, but these settings can also be altered.
Use a Firewall
Firewalls alert you when suspicious software attempts to install itself on your computer, often preventing spyware by doing so. Hardware firewalls prevent more attacks than software firewalls, but even a software firewall helps more than none at all.
