My XP Professional Laptop Won’t Shut Down or Restart

Sometimes software errors or corrupted files can cause your laptop to freeze up; when this happens you may not be able to use Windows Professional XP to shut it down or restart it. This problem could also be a symptom of a virus or other malware having infected your computer. If you cannot use Windows to shut down or restart your laptop, you will have to shut it down manually. It may be necessary to change a setting of your USB controllers; this will prevent the problem from re-occurring but will shorten battery life.
Powering Down
1 – Unplug the computer, if using the power cord. Removal of the battery is not necessary.
2 – Press the computer’s power button to shut the computer down. In some cases, this may still not start the shut down process. Press and hold the power button down until it shuts down. Sometimes a computer will not respond to just pressing the power button once; hold it down and it will turn off after about 10 seconds.
3 – Wait at least 30 seconds. Press the power button to turn the computer back on.
USB Controller Power Management Settings
1 – Click the “Start” button on the task bar. Click “My Computer.” Right-click anywhere on the new window. Click “Properties” from the menu that appears.
2 – Click the “Hardware” tab.
3 – Click “Device Manager.”
4 – Click “Universal Serial Bus controllers.” Right-click “USB Root Hub.” Click “Properties.” Click the “Power Management” tab. Clear the check box that says “Allow the computer to shut down this device to save power.” Click “OK.” If there is more than one USB Root Hub listed under the Universal Serial Bus controllers, you will need to repeat this process for each USB Root Hub.
Windows computers include a shutdown/restart feature designed to save energy and reduce file fragmenting by ensuring all components of Windows are shut down before the computer powers off. Sometimes they hang up during this routine and you will have to use the power button.
After shutting down and restarting your computer, it is advisable to run a full system scan with your antivirus program, and to use the Disk Defragmenter utility to analyze your hard drive to see if it needs defragmenting. If the utility recommends defragmenting of the hard drive, do so; this may help prevent the problem from occurring again.
