How to Use Internet Browser Securely in Home

How to Use Internet Browser Securely in Home

Educational institutions protect Internet  users from accessing inappropriate or harmful Web content by imposing Internet browsing restrictions on a network through the use of Internet filtering software; however, this isn’t always the case at homes. Implementing Internet browsing security measures at home is important to keep kids and other users from navigating to websites that may expose them to dangerous or unsuitable material. Fortunately, you can use your Internet browser for home security purposes when browsing the World Wide Web.
Browsing Security at Home Using Internet Explorer
1 – Launch Internet Explorer. Click the “Tools” preference on the browser’s menu bar.
2 – Locate the “Internet Options” preference at the lower point of the drop-down menu and click on it. Click on the “Security” tab featured in the Internet Options window. Locate the “Restricted Sites” option displayed with a red icon and click on it. Click on the tab that says “Sites” and stand by while the “Restricted Sites” windows pops up on your screen.
3 – Locate the text box below the heading that says “Add this website to the zone” and type the URL of the website you would like to restrict access to for security purposes. Click on “Add” to confirm your entry. In this section you can add all the websites you would like to restrict on your computer to protect your children and other Internet users at home.
Browsing Security at Home Using Mozilla Firefox
1 – Open Firefox and navigate to the Mozilla Firefox support page (see Resources). If you use Firefox, you must choose and install a filtering add-on to secure your home network’s browsing capabilities. On the Mozilla Firefox support page, you will gain access to filtering add-on options you can choose from.
2 – Navigate through the list of filtering add-ons available on the support page for Firefox. You will see that some add-ons are free and some charge a download fee. A free and widely used filtering add-on is the FoxFilter, so you may want to consider this option. However, you may also select from the options that require a fee such as the ProCon Latte ($3 as of October 2010) or the BlockSite ($5 as of October 2010).
3 – Select the add-on you want to use at home by clicking on it. When the prompt saying “Continue to Download” or “Add to Firefox” is displayed, click on it (the prompt you see will vary depending on the add-on you chose to download). Click the tab saying “Accept and Install” and proceed by clicking on “Install Now.”
4 – Close Firefox and then restart it so the add-on finishes the installation stage. When Firefox is back on your screen, the filtering add-on you chose will be fully installed and you will be able to protect your home network by blocking any site you consider inappropriate for access at your home. The filtering add-on you chose will be showcased to the right of the Firefox menu bar. To begin filtering websites, simply click on its icon and add the websites you want to restrict in the add-ons interface.
