How to Fix Laptop Fan Noise
A lot of laptop noise is generated by the cooling fan. To make your laptop quieter, first try cleaning the fan to make sure that it is dust and grime free. This will make the fan run more easily and quietly. If the fan is still too loud then you can alter the fan speed setting from within the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) menu. Here, you can make your fan run more slowly, which will make the laptop quieter but more likely to overheat.1 – Turn off your laptop, unplug it from the power source and remove the battery.
2 – Turn your laptop upside down, so that the underside is facing up. You will be able to see the fan vents. Almost all laptops are insulated against static shock (since they are often not plugged in and therefore not grounded) and you will not be in physical contact with any of the laptop’s internal components. However, as an extra precaution you can touch a metal surface before continuing.
3 – Unscrew the bottom panel of your laptop with the screwdriver and place the panel and screws to one side.
4 – Use the can of compressed air to blow the dust out of the inside of your laptop, paying close attention to the fan. Cover your nose and mouth to avoid flying dust.
5 – Replace the bottom panel, replace the battery and see if the problem has been solved. If not, then try the second method of adjusting the fan speed.
Adjust the Fan Speed
1 – Start your laptop and press and hold the appropriate key to enter the BIOS menu. Refer to your manufacturer’s handbook to find the correct key. This will usually be either the “Delete,” “Num Lock,” “F8,” “F10″ or “F12″ key.
2 – Enter the “Fan Settings” section. Change the selection around using the arrow keys, and press “Enter” to select. The fan settings will be located under either “Advanced,” “Overclocking” or “CPU,” depending on your computer. Select one of these to enter the submenu for the fan settings. You can use the “Go Back” option to return to the previous screen if you end up in the wrong place at any point.
3 – Open the fan settings and you will see the “Fan High Temperature” and “Fan High Voltage” settings, as well as the “Fan Low Temperature” and “Fan Low Voltage.” How much you should change these settings will depend on your computer and your use of it.
4 – Begin by making the smallest possible adjustments, and then try your laptop with these new settings. If your system is still cool and stable then make another set of small adjustments, and so on, until you laptop is suitably quiet. If your laptop becomes hot or unstable then immediately return to the previous settings.
5 – Increase the “Fan High Temperature” so that the fan will run at its noisier maximum speed less often.
6 – Increase the “Fan Low Temperature” so that the fan will run less often.
7 – Decrease the “Fan High Voltage” and “Fan Low Voltage” settings so the fan will run more slowly and quietly.
8 – Use the “Save Settings and Exit” option to return to the main BIOS menu.
9 – Use the “Exit” option to leave the BIOS menu. Your laptop will restart, using the new, quieter fan settings. If you have problems with these new settings then change them back in the same way, from the BIOS menu.
Warning
Reducing the fan speed may result in overheating problems. If your laptop becomes hot, or unstable, after these changes, then return the settings to their previous state.
